Personal Biography
My name is Jim Glackin and I live in west Mount Vernon with my wife Paula and our two daughters, Clare and Caroline. I'm in my sixth year of real estate, all with Windermere/Skagit Valley and before that I was a small business owner with a specialty contracting company in the Seattle area. My wife and I have been Skagit County residents since 1992. I've been active in the community through my children's schools and have served in officer and board positions in school, church, community and club groups in the area. I'm currently on the board of directors of the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon and I’m also the Membership Chairman for that group. I've also been a board member of the Skagit Symphony for a number of years and will serve a term in 2007-2008 as President of that Board. My hobbies include beekeeping, music, reading, computers, and hiking and climbing in the mountains. I'm originally from Pennsylvania and have been in Washington State since 1982. I'm a graduate of the University of Massachusetts with a BA degree in English.
Business Background
Although I received a college degree in English, most of my work experience has been in the construction trades. I have over twenty years experience in construction, first in New England and Pennsylvania, then in the Seattle metro area. As a specialty contractor I was in hundreds of homes throughout that time and came to know what constituted a well-designed and well-built home. I've seen many remodels of existing homes and was also involved in new home construction. Another aspect of my business brought me into commercial buildings and large companies and museums. A few of my clients in the commercial arena included Starbucks, Yuen Lui Photography Studios, the Children's Museum of Seattle, the Burke Museum and Children's Hospital of Seattle. Throughout this time it was necessary to negotiate sometimes complicated contracts and scopes-of-work that required a lot of attention to detail. Over the course of my construction career I was privileged to work with many talented builders, architects, interior designers and many gracious business and property owners.
Real Estate Expertise
Real estate has been a very rewarding career for me as it's allowed me to use my expertise in construction and business as well as my writing and college background. There is a lot of detail work in real estate with contracts and it's important to understand and get things done properly and promptly. There is also the aspect of understanding houses and how they are constructed. Then, more broadly, there is the idea of neighborhoods and property values. There is also the ability to relate to people and their needs and wants. With my background, all this has come together easily for me and allowed me to list and sell many properties successfully. I have worked over the last six years to educate myself broadly in real estate matters. I've taken many courses in all aspects of real estate and business and property issues. I have reached the level of associate broker, the highest real estate designation in Washington state. Fewer than 10% of Washington real estate licensees have reached this level of expertise.
